No matter how healthy I think I am, I am suffering from an incurable condition – human mortality! A wise master of the East was once asked by a pupil what did enlightenment mean to him. “It means that I know I shall die someday” he replied. “But everybody knows that,” said the pupil. “Yes, but not everybody lives with the knowledge!”  We’re told that ‘as a man lives so shall he die’ and all of our living is but a preparation for our departure. Whether we like it or not, each one of us is in the proverbial departure lounge of life and the only difference is that our place is the queue will be slightly different.

Everything we learn is acquired through the senses. At this time of year, nature is preparing for its annual rest and the final leaves are being shed by way of preparation. We often see a similar process taking place in the lives of those who decide to downsize as they enter the autumn of their lives. How wise to hold on to everything with open hands, since we can take nothing with us when the time of departure does eventually come.

While Jesus told us that we should live as if the end was about to happen at any moment, He also told us that we should look forward to it; as prisoners and slaves look forward to the day of their freedom. If we’re honest, while most of us do not fear death itself; we may be afraid of the great unknown, afraid of the actual process of dying and what will become of us.

Prayers of St. John Henry Newman

Dear Jesus,

Help me to spread Your fragrance everywhere I go.
Flood my soul with Your spirit and life. Penetrate and possess my whole being so utterly,
that my life may only be a radiance of Yours. Shine through me, and be so in me that every soul I come in
contact with may feel Your presence in my soul. Let them look up and see no longer me but only Jesus! Stay with me and then I shall begin to shine as You shine, so to shine as to be a light to others; The light, O Jesus will be all from You; none of it will be mine; It will be you shining on others through me.

O Lord,

Support us all the day long, Until the shadows lengthen and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over and our work is done. Then, Lord, in your mercy grant us a safe lodging, a holy rest, and peace at the last, through Christ Jesus, our Lord. Amen

St. Mary’s Cathedral Monthly Draw 2021 – 2022

Cathedral Draw

beginning

Wednesday evening

29th September 2021

for twelve monthly draws.

Tickets available - €10 per month

Dooley’s Garage, Georges Tree,

John McGrath, News and Chews,

Ms. Sheila Walshe and Sr. Mary Freeman

As you are aware, the St. Mary’s Cathedral Restoration Fund Draw has for the past number of years been a most welcome support of the Cathedral and a great aid in works undertaken therein. As I have noted before, I am taken by its beauty each time I come to celebrate Mass in your fine Cathedral. I want to thank the generosity of all of you in the parishes who do so much each year to support and encourage the draw. This draw in these past six years raised nearly €600,000. If you are in a position to support the draw this year beginning with the first of twelve draws on Wednesday 29th September 2021. Your support, as always, is much appreciated.

Bishop Denis Nulty, Apostolic Administrator, Ossory.
